    Activities : Skiing

Iceland has a wide choice of downhill resorts and also offers extensive cross-country skiing with hundreds of kilometers of prepared trails. Icelanders speak excellent English, the skiing environment is safe and children are positively welcomed. The standards of service, accommodation and equipment are known to be very good.

With parts of the country previously covered in snow for more than half the year, skiing has been a way of life in Iceland as much as a sport. The cold air in winter was crisp and dry and the sky is often clear blue. It has before always maintained an excellent snow record with good skiing conditions. But the effect of the Gulf Stream and changing weather conditions means that Iceland's climate now is milder than in similar latitudes elsewhere. And with these global warming patterns has also meant that Iceland has experienced much milder and more snow-free winters in recent years.

This has unfortunately negatively impaired upon the conditions here in recent times. It is therefore imperative to contact the Hotel before embarking on a trip to Iceland destined as a ski vacation. It is of course always a nice action-packed complement during a winter vacation here.

The main downhill skiing resort close to South Iceland is the Bláfjöll Mountain area, just east of Reykjavik. There are also plans of building a ski resort close to the nearby Tindfjallajökull glacier. Around Akkureyri in the north - there is however still usually good winter skiing annually.
